My Job as a Wellsite Drilling Engineer
By Juno Joyner
As a wellsite drilling engineer, my job was to assist the drilling supervisor in running the rig. Work starts at 5 a.m. and ends when there's nothing left to do. This usually means that I would work until 10 p.m. but this was a good day when the rig wasn't as busy. If I'm not lucky, I'd have to work literally 24 hours or more without sleep. When there's a job in the middle of the night, I'd have wake up to make sure the job runs smoothly. A typical day at work is to wake up at 4 a.m.. I would then take a shower, smoke a few cigarettes, get to the office, light up some more, start doing my morning report for a teleconference with the team at the office at 6:30 a.m.. Meeting with the rig people starts at 6:00 a.m. At 7 a.m., I get a chance to have some breakfast (if I'm lucky). After breakfast I take of some logistics. Logistics is what's taking most of my time. The phone is always ringing. Even though I'm an engineer, I also do logistics because we have no-one to do it for us. After logistics, I read the project plan (I forget what it's called) and make some calculations/preparations for the next job. I prepare a week's job in advance so that I wouldn't have to hurry too much. Then I do more logistics until lunch time. Lunch is free and that's good. After lunch , I do more logistics stuff until 6 p.m.. Then I have dinner before I start doing report for the day until usually 10 p.m. When there's a big problem I usually end up working a few days without sleep. |
