Argon-Inflatable Clothing and Sleeping Pads?

Down is(or was) the best insulation for clothing and sleeping bags because it can trap more air than any other material. Air is a good insulator of heat so that you lose less heat through conduction as a result of temperature differences (warm inside and cold air outside.) Recently at the Outdoor Retailer show, a company called Klymit, introduced something even better than down. The argon-inflatable clothing and sleeping pads were revealed. Some claim the type of insulation used is the holy grail of insulation but we've yet to test this crazy invention. The cool thing about it though is that you can adjust how much insulation you want by simply turning a knob. They claim to have the only adjustable insulation in the market and they're probably not wrong. Not until someone else steals the idea anyway. By using argon to inflate clothing for insulation, the result is a warmer, thinner and lighter clothing and camping mattress compared to ones using other materials. There is also no need to worry about insulation in case it got wet (unlike in down clothing.) Companies have been trying to improve synthetics in order to beat the power of down for many years but these guys are smart enough to take another route. I think they've finally got it. This might replace down after all but we'll have to see. |
